About us
We are Jill and Chris. We bought Sealark Cottage at the end of 2023 and have done a refurbishment with full redecoration and all new furniture and have totally revamped the courtyard style garden. We opened in September 2024.
We chose to buy in Hinderwell because of the location. We love walking and there are so many stunning walks in the area. When we come up to Sealark to stay, we enjoy walking direct from the cottage. The views from Port Mulgrave on the Cleveland Way National Trail, just a 10 minute walk away, are always stunning and change in different weathers.
We love exploring the North York Moors National Park, such an area of great beauty, tranquility and changing landscapes. We enjoy visiting local festivals and exhibitions and especially during the summer, there are so many to discover - food festivals, art festivals, country shows, and all the festivals at nearby Whitby, such as Goth weekend.
We love visiting Whitby, but enjoy coming back to Sealark away from the bustle of Whitby. In the summer we will eat al fresco in the garden area and listen out for the owls. In winter, we will light the wood burning stove and snuggle down with a glass of wine.
Jill knows the North York Moors area really well. Her father was born in nearby Fylingthorpe, near Robin Hoods’ Bay, and then moved to Hinderwell with his mum when he was a little boy. Jill’s grandma lived in Hinderwell until her old age. Jill’s great uncle was the village policeman in Hinderwell during the 2nd world war.
Jill remembers many happy holidays in the area – fossil hunting at Port Mulgrave, sandcastle competitions at Sandsend, rock pooling at Runswick Bay, eating the best fish and chips ever and lots of trips out exploring the pretty villages of the North York Moors National Park. She has since introduced Chris to the area – which he now loves. When we arrive at Sealark Cottage, we immediately destress and relax in the natural surroundings.
Hinderwell has everything you need for a holiday – The Badger Hounds Pub is a few minutes’ walk away and serves nice food: the gorgeous Old School Tea Rooms a couple of doors away: the butchers (amazing steak pies) and convenience stores: a fish and chip shop: bus stop that goes to Whitby and Sandsend.
We regularly spend time at Sealark Cottage and wanted it to be our home from home. We hope it will be yours as well if you stay with us. We hope to see you soon.
