Fossil Hunting

The North Yorkshire Coast is great for fossil hunting. Please be aware though that the cliffs are unstable and prone to cliff falls, so don’t dig or stand near the cliffs. When I was a teenager holidaying in Hinderwell to visit my grandma, we often went fossil hunting at Port Mulgrave. It was a great place for finding fossils and I once found a complete 12-inch ammonite.

Whitby Museum has displays of many of the fossils found in and around Whitby. Ichthyosaurs were marine reptile and one fossilised ichthyosaur found near Whitby measured around eight metres. I can’t guarantee that you will find an ichthyosaur but you can often find fossils on the beaches near Sealark Cottage.

To give you a better chance, you can book onto a local fossil trip.
